CONGRATULATIONS TO CHRIS BEHREN’S. On June 5th, he submitted a poem to Writer’s Digest Poem Contest, titled, a basketballer’s ditty. And on Monday, he received this letter to let him know he won. When I asked, Chris said, “I shared the poem on social media and people loved it. I had worked on this poem off and on for years and decided this spring it was time to FINISH it, finally, and I did! I just kept reworking it and polishing it. The title changed many times, and it was right before the deadline that I settled on the winning title! “:)

Jolene Gutierrez and Minoru Tonai’s UNBREAKABLE: A JAPANESE AMERICAN FAMILY IN AN AMERICAN INCARCERATION CAMP, historical fiction picture with extensive back matter, based on the experiences of Minoru Tonai, a Japanese American whose father was arrested by the FBI after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and whose family was imprisoned in an incarceration camp in Amache, Colorado, during World War II, illustrated by Chris Sasaki, to Meredith Mundy at Abrams Children’s, for publication in fall 2025, by Kaitlyn Sanchez at Bradford Literary Agency for the author, and by Kirsten Hall at Catbird Productions for the illustrator (world).
